Alberto Contador And Ivan Basso Launch Aurum Bikes

High profile former pro riders Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso have officially launched new bike brand ‘AURUM’.

The culmination of more than 30 years of combined experience in the pro peloton and multiple Grand Tour wins, Contador and Basso say the project has been years in planning and development.

The first model from Aurum – which is Latin for gold – is the Magma, an aero-optimised race-ready build available direct from the company. Slickly sculpted and clearly aimed at the high-end / high-performance market, the bike is available as a frameset (circa $AU6750) or the complete build  for around $16200 depending upon exchange rate.

Bicycling Australia have not yet ridden the Magma though we have put in a request to do so. We have seen a test bike up close and can vouch for its supreme finish, acute attention to detail and clear aero attributes. An example of this is a ‘head tunnel’, an integrated slot on the front of the head tube that neatly carries brake cables into the frame.

Frame weight is stated as 850grams in size M, and will be available in six sizes from 50cm to 61cm.

In launching the brand Contador and Basso said during their careers they enjoyed using some of the world’s finest bikes – ‘equipment that was always selected by the team and sponsors for them.’

“That left a desire, a question in their minds, of how it would be with the freedom to choose, to design the bike of their dreams,” they say in the launch notes.

“The Magma is the ultimate racing road bike – fast everywhere – created, designed and tested by Alberto and Ivan.”

“When designing and developing Magma, the goal was to go a level higher than the top racing road bikes in the market, to tick all the boxes for the highest performance: Aerodynamics, Stiffness, Comfort, Weight, Handling,” reads the product release.

“Alberto and Ivan wanted Magma to be the ultimate racing road bike, the best performer in any situation no matter what the route profile and conditions.”
